Imagine this for a moment… your phone dies.
Not for an hour. Not for a day. But for four hundred years.
No texts. No calls. No updates. Just silence.
That’s exactly what happened between the Old and New Testaments.
For generations, God had spoken to His people through prophets — and then suddenly, He went silent.
Now, we’d all wonder the same thing:
“Why would God do that?”
Let’s talk about it.
The Preparation of the quiet
Here’s the first truth I want you to hold onto:
God may seem quiet, but He is never still.
Jesus said in John 5:17,
“But Jesus answered them,“My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Even when I can’t see Him moving, I can trust that He’s working behind the scenes.
Sometimes, God’s silence isn’t absence — it’s preparation.
During those 400 years, God was setting the stage for Jesus.
- The Greek language became common so the Gospel could spread easily.
- The Romans built roads that missionaries would later travel.
- And the Jewish people — though persecuted — clung tightly to the hope of a coming Messiah.
You see, God wasn’t late. He wasn’t ignoring them. He was right on time.
Romans 5:6 (NIV)
“At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.”
At just the right time. Not too early, not too late — perfect timing.
Maybe right now, you’re living in one of those quiet seasons — when heaven feels silent.
But family, quiet doesn’t mean separation. It often means preparation.
The Faith of the Quiet
Now, let’s be honest — waiting isn’t easy.
As Saint Tom Petty once said, “The waiting is the hardest part.”
He wasn’t a theologian, but he wasn’t wrong either.
Faith isn’t proven when everything is clear. Faith is proven when God feels far away.
Hebrews 11:1 (NLT) tells us,
Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
The heroes of faith — Abraham, Moses, David — they didn’t live easy lives. Many of them never saw the promises fulfilled in their lifetime.
Hebrews 11:39 (NLT)
“All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised.
Their faith held strong not because they saw God’s hand, but because they trusted His heart.
Psalm 56:3,4 (NLT)
“But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. 4 I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?
Maybe today, you’re waiting on a promise. Maybe you’ve been praying for something and the quiet feels heavy.
Let me encourage you — this season of quiet might just be where your faith grows the most.
God isn’t punishing you; He’s building you.
The Impact of the Quiet
Think about the days leading up to Christmas. Kids open their Advent calendars, counting down the days. Every door opened builds the anticipation a little more.
That’s what God was doing during those 400 years. He was building anticipation for the greatest moment in history.
Then — finally — silence broke.
John 1:14 (ESV)
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
God spoke again — but this time, through a baby’s cry in Bethlehem….
He didn’t send a prophet……He sent His Son.
That moment changed everything.
And just like the people of Israel once waited for Jesus to come, we now wait for Him to return.
Romans 8:22,23 (NLT)
“For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us..”
All creation — even you and me — is waiting for redemption to be complete.
Lamentations 3:25,26 reminds us,
“The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
Waiting quietly doesn’t mean doing nothing.
– It means resting with trust.
– It means believing that while we wait, God works.
Those Three Little Dots
In the Skit Guys video, Eddie talks about those three little dots that show up on your screen when someone’s typing a text.
You know that feeling — you’re waiting… watching… wondering what they’re going to say.
Those dots mean something: An answer is coming.
Right now, you might feel like you’ve been staring at those dots forever — waiting for God to respond.
But I promise you — He’s still typing….Your answer is on its way.
Psalm 27:13,14 (ESV)
“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!
Ladies and gentlemen, the quiet you’re in right now may be setting the stage for your breakthrough. The waiting may be the place where your faith grows roots.
And when God finally speaks — His words will fill your silence with purpose, peace, and promise.
So… wait.
Trust.
And believe that even in the quiet, God is writing something beautiful.
